The Diversity of Dirt

2016, over six months I compiled 12 different samples from 12 locations in Los Angeles County, selected from the Soil Survey Maps of 1902 and 2004, published by the National Resources Conservation Service and the Bureau of Soils. Each sample was jar tested for soil type and on display for the final exhibition at USC – Dirty Talk. Additionally, using soil paints made from the collected dirt samples, I recreated a version of the 1903 Soil Survey Map. The installation included a walkable soil type triangle for audiences to experience the different textures and varieties of the dirt sampled for the project.
